A great weekend endured and enjoyed by all!!

The snow came down so it was looking like we were never going to make the gig. As the cotton wool lumps fell from the sky then settled on the ground without any fear of melting only to be joined by others to lay a carpet of white that was impossible to drive through. We advanced slowly towards the south battling the elements freezing windscreen wiper jets and slushy road spray from passing Lorries. Stone Henge to the right and to the left a blanket of white that seemed to go on for eternity. Through temperatures of minus eight we drove on till we eventually came upon this small town with wonderful  Gothic architecture that seemed to be frozen in time………………………………………..

Enough of all that….

The Anniversary Circle first time out gig went ok despite having to fight against the elements and other unforeseen sound problems with the backing track and other audible/inaudible experiments that seemed to be going on, on stage. Most of the feedback post gig was positive but not without criticism which I can only say (after watching the videos back) was justified. Although I feel I must say The Queen who was hung in pride of place above the stage left entrance had a smile on her face throughout. I enjoyed the gig enough to give me the bug to go out and do it again soon but lessons have been learned and I know next time to do it all a little different.

 Cauda Pavonis where dark gothic, powerful, and played a brilliant set which included Wardance and Blood Kiss. Go and see them live if you get a chance you won’t be disappointed

Eileen Daly and the Courtesans music is described as fabulous gypsy glam with dark tales in waltz-time. They were exactly that and more. They kept the party dancing and I’m looking forward to seeing them perform again very soon I hope.

ANNIVERSARY CIRCLE - debut single ANNIVERSARY CIRCLE ANNIVERSARY CIRCLE AC Strange, mysterious and interesting, that’s this band, whose Yorkshire-based origins go back to the 80’s, when they rejoiced in the name of Edo La Tree Le Plastic Elephants, but then they spilt off into Skeleton Crew and Malak Brood. Martin Johnson (guitar/vocals/keys) and Keith Young (bass/guitar/vocals) reformed in 1989 with the ill-advised name of Fruit Eating Bears (which was also once a dire punk band). That came to a very hasty finish, but still the pull exists, and they’ve been back a few years now tinkering away towards a greater purpose, for which they have recently been joined by Ed Morgan (keys/prog) and Estelline Kermagoret (vocals), so things are getting as serious as they are engaging. Both tracks are very cool and actually end up frustrating because they sound like to openings tracks of what would be a great album, and where is the album? It isn’t here. That disgraceful omission aside, ‘Anniversary Circle’ starts ominously, with rasping synth noise over a steady, solemn bass, with gaseous vocals flowing through. The mood is tense, the sounds juicy, like something ambient on fire, with vocals caught in the embers. It’s a powerful sound, with a steady vocal guiding presence, which gradually subsides and slips away, much like a suicidal vicar. ‘Take’ ups the Gothy ante, the female vocals creeping around the smouldering bass, with some rapacious guitar thrusting across, and gradually the vocals assert their genteel qualities, leaving the track to again ebb away carrying less threat and more charm. Take is Anniversary Circles new song which delves into untouchable subject matter seeking danger from strangers. To some it may give the impression that who ever they are are asking for what ever they are asking for. I assure you that is not the case in this lyrical path dedicated to the unforgivable and the strange.

On vocals we are joined by the very talented Estelliane Kermagoret who gives the song its intimate flavour and texture with her angelic tones.

Mart Anniversary Circle

Whilst we try to understand the rudiments and theory’s of the Anniversary Circle we have to take a step back without judgment to try and figure out what they are all about.They have been labelled as Goth, Traditional Goth, and Post Punk and as quoted by Jimmy Percy “Spacey Wacsey”. Which one can understand when their songs are about streetlights that project no sense (or is that nonsense) abstrack ghosts that fall down the stairs, falling asleep at the wheel. But their latest penned song called Understand is about war politics and what the band themselves call superpower terrorism. Is it a natural progression for band influenced by the eighties? The answer is no the band is from the Eighties.Martin and Keith grew up in what was once thriving mining community in South Yorkshire which now almost none existent. But as the mists begin clear you begin to see where their influence lies. Lets be honest when you have been well and truly shafted by Margaret Thatcher and still come out of the other side singing about tissues in the air and spilling tea you have got to have lived through the Eighties even if it smells birt romantic.With their dark rumblings, spacey vocals and coming from the eighties their music is firmly planted in the present and the future. They are a band that are the flowers that break through the cracks in the pavement.
